Gentlemen, we can rebuild him!

One of the favourite series during my childhood was the 70's hit series The Six Million Dollar Man.

Astronaut & test pilot Steve Austin is badly injured when his plane crashes spectacularly. It is then decided to rebuild him with the latest in technology, and so Austin is fitted with 2 bionic legs, as well as a new right arm and right eye.

While he initially has a hard time coming to terms with what he has become - namely, a cyborg, which is short for "cybernetic organism" - he reluctantly starts working as a special agent for the US, using his bionic strength and speed to perform jobs that would be very hard if not impossible to do for any ordinary men.

The series was a big hit, running for several TV seasons. Already being crazy about SF even then, I was a huge fan. For my sixth(!) birthday I got the SMDM action doll, which came with a really cool bionic arm and special right eye. Awesome!

My first encounter with the world of science fiction

When I was very very young, sometime in the mid-70's, I had what I'm sure must have been my first encounter with the wonderful world of science fiction. A British-Italian TV series called Space: 1999 was shown on TV.

I didn't understand English yet (my native language is Dutch) and I couldn't read yet - I was THAT young - so I only had a vague idea about what was going on, but most of the times it wasn't too hard to figure out.

What blew me away were the visuals and the atmosphere, which Space: 1999 had plenty of. Excitement, horror - some of the episodes were pretty darn scary especially if you're a young kid.

But I was sold! And in the years that would follow I would encoounter many other TV shows and movies. But that's for another post. :-)
